Can thinking positively really change your life?

Updated: Sep 12, 2022

Never heard of Positive Mental Attitude? Born by the forefather of new age thought Napoleon Hill in 1937, carried through to 1980/90s and rammed down our throats by the Dale Carnegie advocates, Positive Mental Attitude (PMA for short) has survived the times to be the concept of the moment.

So what is it? PMA is the philosophy that having an optimistic disposition in every situation in your life attracts positive changes and increases achievement. Sounds rather simple maybe to the point of being airy fairy, but it is really that easy and does it actually work?

Many of the clients who come to see me have difficulty with maintaining a positive focus, and I am never surprised. When life deals you a shitty hand, it’s so easy to focus on the negative, be it the lack of finding the solution, worrying about the outcome or berating yourself over the mere existence of the negative situation. All these actions, whilst being made with the best intentions, lead to the feeling of lack and that more often than not leads to further negativity.

So how can you focus on positives when in a negative situation? Everyone knows the phrases that every cloud has a silver lining, the rainbow only comes after the storm and when life gives you lemons make lemonade, but it’s really not that simple is it? Or is it?

We all have positive things we can focus on, things that make us happy or things we feel really grateful for, and as I regularly remind my clients, you cannot change the world outside you, just the world within you. Now look at your mind’s focus. Is it positive? Is it the amazing miracles that occur around you on a daily basis, or the special people you have in your life, or the way the security guard at work smiles when you leave in the evening? See where I am coming from with this? The list is endless if you choose to look and acknowledge. I encourage my clients working towards PMA to journal 6 positives/happy/gratitudes a day (delete as applicable, this is yours to own including the language you use), 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening, with no two days being the same, as that’s just cheating and paying lip service to the exercise. By changing your focus towards the happier, more positive aspects of your life, after 2-4 weeks you are guaranteed to have shifted your mental attitude. For those finding it really hard, try harder. There is so much to be grateful for in your life, a hot shower after a long day, the sticky bun you treated yourself to, the smile your son gave to you when you picked him up from school, the stranger who helped you pick up the change you dropped on the floor at the checkout…..the list is endless.

And the funny thing about looking on the bright side? The more you notice, the more that appears for your notice, and the more positive you feel. And the more positive you feel the more positive your life becomes.

So how is this working? The ground level explanation is that by coping better with the negative and accepting and moving beyond it, allows you the freedom to move past problems without damaging your own self esteem. On a vibrational level positive attracts positive, so the more positive you feel, the more positive experiences you attract.

So the next time life gives you lemons, make lemonade, pour yourself a glass and feel the positive vibes as the bubbles hit your tummy.
